I have forced myself to contradict myself in order to avoid conforming to my own taste.

- Marcel Duchamp

Dada and Surrealism

These two movements of the 20th century are, to put it simply, a rejection of the conventional definition of art. In fact, many artists rejected even the notion of having a definition for art. The history paintings so revered during the Baroque and the Renaissance were gone. Natural landscapes of the Romantic Era, portraits of love during the Rococo - also gone. This period laid the foundations for the birth of new art forms that numerous critics, even today, consider inferior to 'real art'. Nevertheless, these artists aggressively pushed the boundaries of creative expression and actively challenged prevailing norms. Their work inevitably influenced the lens through which we look at art, culture and society today.
