Guernica. The Creation of Adam. Shakuntala. The Mona Lisa. The Starry Night. Les Chadoufs. Tchaar-Bagh.

Have you ever looked at such paintings, and wondered, what exactly is going on there? What’s the painter trying to say, and why? And how did they even paint something like that? Works of art are rarely just works of art; they often are a fascinating representation of their age. Delving deep into them, understanding their relevance and context and tapping into the artists’ mind can reveal some beautiful stories. But as modern conspiracists knock each other’s tin-foil hats off with wild theories, it can be hard to discern the true intentions and historical settings that influenced their making.

After years of going down the rabbit hole of art history, one thing is clear to me—exploring old art can get complicated real quick. The myriad techniques, art movements, politics, rivalries and cults (yes, cults) that influence every piece are staggering. In this blog, I try to consolidate all these elements and provide a holistic view of how art has evolved over the years. Artists’ backgrounds, socio-economic pressures, religious agencies, I’ll attempt to account for them all. If you’re interested, do take some time to go through the blog. I hope you enjoy it!
